Himachal Elections on Nov 12; Gujarat Dates Not Announced

Himachal Pradesh will go to polls on November 12, the Election Commission said on Friday but did not announce the poll schedule for Gujarat citing past precedents. Addressing a press conference, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar said the counting of votes for Himachal Pradesh polls will take place on December 8 and elaborate arrangements have been made to ensure maximum participation of voters in the “festival of democracy”.

In the elections to the 68-member assembly with over 55 lakh eligible voters, the BJP will seek to overturn the three-decade convention of no ruling party returning to power by defeating the main opposition Congress in the hill state. Meanwhile, a bomb threat on a flight arriving from Moscow was received by the CISF at the international airport here in the early hours of Friday, police said. According to the police, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) received an e-mail warning of a bomb on the flight.

The flight landed at the Delhi airport between 3 and 4 am, and its 386 passengers and 14 crew members were immediately evacuated, a senior police official said. The flight was checked and nothing has been found so far, the official said, adding that the aircraft has been isolated.

In Punjab, Border Security Force troops shot down a drone that entered India from Pakistan’s side along International Border at 4.35 am in Gurdaspur sector. A massive search operation is launched in the entire area. “Brave jawans of BSF heard a drone coming from Pakistan side. As soon as it entered India, jawans fired 17 rounds of bullets at it. One of the blades of the drone was damaged. Entire area is being searched. The drone will be analysed,” Prabhakar Joshi, BSF DIG, Gurdaspur told news agency ANI.
